Cory Booker Says He Is Prepared To Go To Jail To Fight Trump
New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker appeared on MSNBC’s The Briefing on Thursday, making it abundantly clear that not even the threat of imprisonment from President Donald Trump will silence him.
During the segment, host Jen Psaki raised the issue of Trump’s recent criticisms and inquired about the message Booker had for whistleblowers and others who are voicing their concerns in a charged political climate.
“Trump attacked you today,” Psaki remarked. “You hold an elected position. You accept that, I understand. But what do you say to individuals? What is your message to whistleblowers or those whose narratives are crucial to share about why they should act now, and what effect it could have?”
Booker responded without hesitation. “Stand up and fight,” he declared.
“I will continue to fight,” he added. “I am unfazed if this president calls me out daily, sends me mean tweets, or threatens me.”
Booker highlighted the arrests of officials in Newark as part of what he characterized as a larger campaign of intimidation.
“We know I’ve engaged in open discussions with senators I never imagined I would, due to what they’ve done to a congressperson,” he stated. “My Congresswoman LaMonica McIver — they arrested her. My mayor — they’ve arrested him. It appears they are targeting individuals in Newark who hold elected positions. But I am undeterred. Throw me in jail. Do what you must. I will persist in standing up for what is right.”
He concluded with a plea for others to join his cause.
“I hope that when one individual stands up and calls this out, it inspires the courage of another person and then another and another,” Booker continued. “We must, at a time when our fundamental rights and freedoms — the very democracy we cherish — is under siege by this president, have more individuals willing to stand up and confront him.”
Rep. McIver, a Democrat representing New Jersey, made her first court appearance in May after being charged by the Department of Justice for allegedly assaulting ICE agents.
Participating virtually from Washington, D.C., the judge instructed McIver to surrender her firearms and prohibited her from traveling outside the United States until her preliminary hearing, which occurred on June 11.
According to Fox News, the New Jersey Democrat is raising funds in response to her indictment to “fight back” against what she claims are racially motivated charges.
During the video appearance, 38-year-old McIver was informed of her rights before being released on her own recognizance. If convicted, she faces a potential sentence of up to eight years in prison and a fine reaching $250,000, as reported by the New York Post.
McIver is restricted from leaving the country unless travel is necessary for official duties, and she must notify the government in advance in such instances, The Post noted.
Having represented New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District since September, McIver dismissed the charges as “purely political” and accused ICE agents present of escalating the situation, despite video evidence appearing to show her shoving and striking ICE agents at a New Jersey detention facility.
“It was very unnecessary,” she stated to CNN on Tuesday, labeling the charges as “absurd” while asserting that she was “there to do my job.”
“If I’m going to be charged with a crime for doing my job, it really speaks to where we’re headed in this country,” she remarked.
Acting New Jersey US Attorney Alina Habba defended the felony charges, informing The Post that the alleged assault on federal agents by the congresswoman is intolerable.
“This has nothing to do with congressional oversight, and it has nothing to do with politics. It’s about respecting those who risk their lives to keep us safe,” stated Habba, who previously served as President Donald Trump’s personal attorney.
